Message from the Chair

Welcome to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department of Neurology. We are an enthusiastic group of physicians in one of the fastest growing fields in medicine. Our goals are to offer the people of South Carolina the full spectrum of neurological services, to be in the forefront of patient care, teaching, providing and discovering new treatments for neurological diseases, using the resources of our state's flagship University.

We have faculty with expertise in neurology and specific representations in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, headache, stroke, movement disorders, memory and sleep disorders. We work closely with our colleagues in Neurosurgery, Neuropsychiatry and Neuro-radiology departments to provide the most comprehensive care to patients with Neurological diseases. We have ties with the department of Pediatrics in the field of childhood neurological disorders. In addition to the physicians, our department has a very important resource: our staff. We work together as a team with a goal to provide quality patient care.

We are dedicated to teaching. We provide educational programs for our medical students, residents and fellows that teach compassion and quality care. We are partnering with the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital and the Dorn Veteran's Hospital to provide an ACGME accredited Neurology residency training program within the state's Flagship University. We are dedicated to provide comprehensive neurological training to the future physicians of South Carolina. The program offers training in Stroke Telemedicine, Clinical Research and Neurology Business Administration, giving the residents an edge over those trained elsewhere. The training and education programs are spearheaded by a group of energetic faculty experts in their own subspecialty areas. Our faculty have published papers and presented their research in National and International meetings. We are currently participating in multicenter clinical trials involving treatments in Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis and Stroke. In addition we are collaborating with researchers in other departments at the University of South Carolina and other institutions in the country.

South Carolina has one of the highest stroke death rates in the country. The University of South Carolina has the infrastructure to build a premier stroke center in the Midlands area. Building such a stroke center would impact the stroke-related morbidity and mortality in this region and the state in general. Through the support of the Center of Economic Excellence Program and the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital we hope to build such a stroke center. I am proud to say that we have assembled a world-class multidisciplinary team of experts providing advanced care in stroke and other areas of neurology.

As you survey our site, you will note that we have an excellent faculty supported by diligent staff, involved in treatment of neurological disorders. We invite your comments and thank you for visiting our site.
